Résumé

L’implantation du christianisme, commencée au Cameroun dès la fin de la première moitié du XIX ème siècle, a connu un réel succès dans les sociétés de la côte et de la zone forestière. Aussi bien chez les catholiques que chez les protestants, les femmes, bien qu'évoluant à l'ombre de leurs coreligionnaires masculins, furent en contacts permanents avec les populations locales et avec les différentes administrations coloniales.

Dans cet article, il est question de montrer le rôle joué par Mme Cozzens, missionnaire américaine d’origine allemande en service au secrétariat de la MPA à Elat, dans l’éveil de la conscience nationaliste chez les populations fang-beti-bulu du Sud Cameroun, rôle qui a fait d’elle l’une des martyres de la lutte anticoloniale au Cameroun.

Abstract

The introduction of Christianity, which started in Cameroon in the first part of the XIX th Century, witnessed remarkable success within the coastal people and those in the forest zone. Within the Catholics and Protestants as well, women were at the centre of this vast enterprise, evolving under their male co-religionists. They were in permanent contact, not only with the indigenous populations, but also with the German colonial administration up to 1916, followed by the French administration.

This article shows the role played by Mrs Cozzens, an American missionary of German extraction, who worked at the Secretary of MPA at Elat, in the wake of nationalist conscience among the Fang-Beti-Bulu populations of the South Province of Cameroon.
